HK Post #2: Before the evidence disappeared

Looking at a friend's blog reminded me that I probably should mark this down before I throw away the score sheet... ho ho ho...

HK Post #1: 快要失踪了的蓮蓉飽

My family is a dim sum family (well, at least my parents are). I think 9.5 out of 10 days I ended up going to dim sum for either breakfast/brunch. In my past two visits back home, I noticed that one of my all time favorite dim sum gradually disappeared from the menu!

Out of the so many kinds of buns available in a restaurant, my favorite is the 蓮蓉飽. And when there's a choice, I definitely prefer 白蓮容 over 黃蓮蓉. However, I found out that not that many restaurants has this anymore. They still have the 叉燒飽, 奶皇飽, 菜肉飽, 流沙飽... just not my 蓮蓉飽! I remember when I was young, the most abundant 飽 you can find any day in the restaurant are 叉燒 and 蓮蓉. From time to time, you would hope that they would have something other buns other than these. (Of course with the introduction of 點心紙, there aren't many chance where you can see those "push-carts"). So it's kind of sad that I only had my 蓮蓉飽 twice while I was in HK. I already where I had the first one (probably 美心皇宫 in Shatin coz I think my aunt was there). The other is all the way in Yuen Long 大榮華 (where the above pic was taken - normally it comes in 3 but I already finished one before I remembered to take a photo). And amazingly these were 白蓮蓉飽 - Yummy! :9 Hopefully next time I go back, they would still have them.

Side Note: the other thing I always ordered is 碗仔翅. Luckily, this is a more available item nowadays. I would say 8 out of 10 restaurants have it. Unfortunately, not the restaurants in Chinatown. :P

Re: Interesting Question

In response to one of my friends blog entry. Basically the question is under what circumstances will your lady friends to your guy friends (ladies: interchange lady/guy)

My friend listed different scenarios detailing how she would handle the various cases. I am, however, a very lazy person. So my answer to the question is almost always. Don't you think it's troublesome to maintain different social groups? So unless there is a really special circumstances, I tend to "mix up" my friends so that know each others. Let them mingle by themselves and I can save the work of being the middle-man. Less work can't be bad... hee hee hee...

Case closed.

Mii Plaza/Parade

My Mii Parade head count kinda stuck at 46 recently - need more friend codes... however, I think someone is still waiting for their Mii Parade... hee hee hee~

On the other hand, my Mii Plaza is kinda sad - Sahana is the only lady Mii in the bunch. :P

Still haven't pick Zelda back up yet - mainly Wii Sports lately. I manage to beat the tennis "champion" the other day. Hohoho~~~ Put in Rayman early tonight - got stuck at the hog racing game... I'd rather do the FPS than this hog racing...Yikes!

Wario should be coming out this week too - I have high hopes for that game, largely because it's a collection of micro games and I can just pick up and play for a short period of time, like 15 - 30 minutes. However, from my newsgroup friends, it sounds like the game's selling a bit cheaper in HK... >_<

When the Saints go Marching In...

The New Orleans Saints that is...

* I probably should blog about my trip back home, but too lazy at the moment...hahaha~ *

So the N.O. Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday and the Bears beat the Seahawks today, setting up a Saints vs. Bears matchup next week in Chicago. Um... difficult choice regarding who I should root for. On one hand, Chicago has been my "home town" in the States for some time; on the other hand, guess who's QB for the Saints? I guess I'll go for the N.O. since I kinda settled down in Madison already. XD

Though the same dilemma will come up again if Indy tops New England... Um...

*** Though Chicago has been my "home town", the place where I stayed the longest is still a little town in Northwest Indiana called (West) Lafayette... ;)

Nintendo Wii - Thanksgiving Outing

Lately this has became a gaming blog... hahaha...

Anyway, my precious Wii got to do some traveling today. Erica's parents invited me to their family Thanksgiving gathering. Since I am trying to lure as many people as possible into the way of Wii, I decided to bring my Wii along.

We actually went to two separate gatherings - and in both occasions, the Wii did not disappoint me at all. Wii Sports proved to be enough for the day and I don't even have to bring out the real party game (Rayman). Within minutes of getting the system up and running, we were all bowling, golfing and boxing away. Dick and Tom dominated Bowling - it would be fun to pitch them against each other and see who will be the Bowling Champ. Though I did not win, the flip side is that my bowling score definitely improved, consistently breaking 100 mark now. Next goal - 150!

I also boxed a bit - I think Sandy did took a picture of me and Tom while we were fighting. I'll have to get my hands on that one so that I can post it up somewhere. Besides grown ups, the little ones also dished it out as well. Needless to say, they liked playing it (well, at least I think they do).

Since we were going to two different places, there was much time to play all the games extensively. I checked my records earlier and we played like an hour each at each place. Hopefully it'll be enough to convince them to buy a Wii~ =)

I am pretty sure my shoulders will be sore tomorrow with all the Wii Sports time I had today. Now only if Nintendo pays me to promote the Wii, that'll be perfect!

Konphused mentioned doing another Wii gathering this weekend, I'll see how that go (if happen, that'll be my 4th Wii "demo" this week...hohoho)

Wii in full force tonight

Hang out at KingSnort's trying out the Wii~ We played for around 4 hrs or so with Konphused and MyEvilInsideYou joining in an hour or two into the night.

Wii Sports got a whole lot of attention, we pretty much tried out each of the 5 "games" in Wii Sports. I think I did good in Tennis; KingSnort Bowling; MyEvilInsideYou for Boxing/Golf and Konphused scored a couple runs in Baseball.

Also popped in Rayman for a bit. The game is a collection of different mini-games. We unlocked about eight tonight. Hopefully with a bit more play time, all the mini-games would become available.

We also took a peak at Zelda, but since it's only a one-person game and it's getting late, we didn't do too much. Everyone did some fishing and walked around with Link and pretty much that was it.

KingSnort took some photos but I am still waiting for them. Maybe I'll Flickr them later.

What a weekend

Never imagined that I would brave through the cold just to get my hands on the newest gadget... Oh well, here's the newest addition to my household, the Nintendo Wii!

I dropped by Target to do some shopping Saturday afternoon and overheard that they won't be letting people line up until 11p that night. Cool, I thought, then the line shouldn't be too long even if I showed up around 4 or 5 am.

I then decided to try my luck at the Baraboo Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, they only had 28 Wii and they already gave out all the tickets at midnight.

Darn, back to Target. This was about 9:30pm.

When I drove past Target (again), I saw a sizable line of people already lining up outside Target. I was like, "What's up with the 11pm thing!?" I realized then I really need to get in line if I want to get my hands on a Wii the next day.

Pretty much the whole camp out experience can be summarized into one word - COLD!!! I believed the temperature was around 32F (0C). Don't forget to add in the wind chill as well. Why can't Nintendo launch the system in a warmer season? Or couldn't the Target employees just start distributing vouchers at 12:01a instead of 7a? These are the things that keep coming to mind as I fought through the night.

People were nice in general, a lot of them were local UW students. There were several tents along the line. One couple even made their own version using blankets and Target shopping carts (they were right in front of me - funny folks). The guys who were behind me actually work at CompUSA, but it sounded like CompUSA isn't going to have any so Target's their best bet (Two of the guys need to work Sunday 10:30 - Ouch). Unfortunately I forgot to bring my camera, so no pic.

People kept trickling in throughout the night. The line added 4 to 5 people every half an hour or so. I think it's around 4 o'clock when we reached the magic number 111 - the number of Wii allocated to our Target. There were these couple guys who walked up & down trying to figure if they could make it. My count fluctuated between 59 to 65. Regardless, both numbers are less than 111 and I will be getting a Wii (if I did not died from hypothermia that is).

Around 4:30a was when the "more normal/reasonable" people started to show up. I can't help but think in my mind, "You are so not getting a Wii - 4:30am!? You seriously thought that you can get a Wii by coming at 4:30a!? Ha!" Funny that had I not seen the line at 9:30p, I too would be one of these people - ones without a Wii on launch day. Though I do kind of felt sorry for those parents showing up trying to get a Wii for their kids. They tended to show up around sunrise but by that time, it was waaaaaaaaaay to late.

7:15a - two guys walked out from Target, one handing out the voucher and the other free T-shirt from Nintendo. So much waiting (10 hrs) for that tiny piece of paper. I am pretty sure there were about 50 or so folks who lined up but didn't get one. Hopefully Nintendo's keeping their end of the promises and keeps the shipment coming.

We just need to get back by 8a and line up in the same order (easy since the voucher has a number on it - mine is exactly 59. Looks like someone was doing an excellent head count earlier). Drove to McD and picked up a much needed breakfast.

830a, my turn getting into Target and picking up the ultimate prize. An extra controller + nun-chuck, Zelda and Rayman along with the console - there goes another $450 down the drain. By 845a, I am a proud owner of a next-gen console. =)

It wasn't such a bad experience, but really wished the weather was warmer (how i envied those LA launches where people are just wearing long sleeve shirts). Don't know if I will ever do it again, but at least I can say that I've camped out for a video game console. XD
